Apr. 16th, 2009 @ 05:45 pm Help me name my new laptop.
Hiding out here: CT2
Mostly feeling: chipper
Now Playing: Grand Designs
So today I paid for my new laptop, a Lenovo Thinkpad SL500, and all things being well, it should arrive in the next 2-3 weeks. So now I'm thinking about names, and I want the lazywebs to help me name it.

My naming scheme for computers is Lord of the Rings based. My main machine is Aragorn, my VM is Legolas, my phone is Eomer, and my current laptop is Shadowfax, named after the horse that Gandalf rides. I chose the name because the horse goes places and so does the laptop. Yes, I know the other characters go places. Just humour me ;)

So, pick. Shadowfax is included in the list as I'm toying with the idea of just calling the new one what the old one was called. I also reserve the right to ignore the whole thing and go with my own choice if there is a tie, or I don't like what you pick ;)

I have two Lush 10% off vouchers to give away - valid for shopping in person and mail order, but not on the internet.

I'd like to give them to two different people. I was going to send them through the post, so it doesn't matter if you're not seeing me any time soon, you're still eligable. I'm going to leave this post "open" for 24 hours so everyone on my friends list has a chance whether they're working, or sleeping or whatever right now.

Comment if you'd like to be considered. Comments are screened.

Aug. 22nd, 2008 @ 07:30 pm Poll: Am I disabled?
Hiding out here: CT2
Mostly feeling: confused
Now Playing: Grange Hill: Series 09 Episode 24
Having made it through Edexcel marking and Clearing more or less in one piece I'm now starting to look at jobs and I've found one I want to apply for.

I've become rather stymied by the "Do you consider yourself to have a disability" question. Thing is, I'm much better than I was, I have to be or I wouldn't consider applying for jobs at all and those closest to me wouldn't let me, but I've been off work for a year, and a year long gap doesn't look good on a CV. I'm still seeing my counsellor and I'm still on happy pills, and though I'm winding down visits to my counsellor I'm probably going to be on the pills for at least another year to make sure I'm properly better and try and stop any relapse. Apparently the first year is when I'm most vulnerable to it. My gut says I should declare it, but I also feel like a bit of a fraud for even considering it.

"The University operates under the Two ticks scheme which means we will interview all applicants with a disability who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities". This is rather valuable, and I feel it's my only shot at an interview given the huge gap on my CV when I was essentially "doing nothing", but am I really disabled as it's counted?

The University say: When answering this question, please note that under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 a disability is defined as ‘a mental or physical impairment which has a substantial and long term effect upon your ability to carry out normal day to day activities.’.

(Please post any expansion on this or thoughts in comments below)

I can't help but feel that this would all be easier if I were visibly physically disabled.

Any (helpful) advice or comments you lot could give would be really great. I'm feeling very mixed up about this, and a tad anxious about giving the "wrong" answer if I'm completely honest. I mean, I was never on benefits while off work (the forms scared me) so never really "disabled" in the eyes of the government. I just don't know what to say :|

Jun. 22nd, 2008 @ 11:53 am Music recommendations?
Hiding out here: CT2
Mostly feeling: curious
Now Playing: ITV F1 French GP Coverage
As you all know, I'm marking for edexcel, and I'm after music to listen to while I do so. It has to be instrumental - I can't concentrate properly if I try to mark while listening to lyrics. I like showtunes - does anyone know an album of showtunes just played by instruments/an orchestra? - and classical music. I also enjoy movie soundtracks. Currently in my playlist are things like The Lord of the Rings soundtracks, The Star Wars soundtracks, Vivaldi, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Mozart.

Any recommendations would be gratefully recieved. I have hours of marking to do (usually between 40 and 60) and end up listening to the same stuff over and over again every year and I want something new.

Thanks :)

Jun. 6th, 2008 @ 11:00 am Male Circumcision
Hiding out here: CT2
Mostly feeling: confused
Now Playing: Third Watch: S1 E10, Demolition Derby
I'm curious about my f-list's opinions on this because I don't really know where I stand. On one of my exmormon mailing lists there's currently a rather heated discussion about Male Circumcision, which some of the posters are calling Male Genital Mutilation. Are they being over the top, or is male circumcision Male Genital Mutilation? There is no doubt that female "circumcision" is mutilation, but I am really not sure where I stand on the male circumcision thing. Is it the same or similar? If it's different, why/how is it different (not talking about the technique itself, but about its perception etc)? Is it not really mutilation at all?

I know it sounds like an odd question, but I'd really appreciate your comments and thoughts on this.

Thanks to those who expressed their opinion earlier :) I'm beginning to feel a bit better about it, not quite so mortified.

I've decided to go see St Trinian's at Ashford on Tuesday, the 13:50 showing. As it's a tuesday, tickets are £4.40 each. As I'm going, I'm happy to take any Canterbunnies who are free then and want to go to a value of 3 or 4 if you want to squish together ;) Just comment below. I'll probably be leaving at 13:15.

Tonight I'm off to see Sweeney Todd. Hurrah. I declare this Cinema Week!

Last night I saw the most recent Wulffmorgenthaler and it amused me. As it was related to women's health somewhat and I found it amsuing I posted it to [info]vaginapagina here late last night and went off to bed. I woke up this morning to a whole bunch of comments (how I read them) basically attacking me for posting something racist and being priviledged because I didn't notice any racial undertones. Now I feel awful. I didn't even notice that the female character was coloured in any way. Does this make me racist or something in some way?

Advice/thoughts? As I said, I feel really awful and I'm looking for some reassurance or something. I'm starting to wonder if I'm missing a huge sensitive part of my brain... :/

One of my Christmas presents is a Blockbuster movie rental account thingy. I'm looking for stuff to add to my rent list, so I am calling upon you, my friends list, for your collective knowledge and opinions :)

If you could share with me your recommendations for stuff to add - I'm open to trying most genres and stuff :) Let me know what your favourites are (and maybe why?) or any you have seen recently that you really enjoyed and would recommend, or a film that is to you like a comfort blanket to go back to again and again or whatever :)

Tomorrow I am off to town to finish my Christmas shopping and meet [info]greenfurrymoose. Should be nice :)
