| Apr. 19th, 2009 @ 02:22 pm Exciting post and geeky bear | |||
|---|---|---|---|
On Friday there was some interesting post and for a change it was all for me! Usually all the postie brings me is bills and bank statements, but today I got a much better haul, which inserted some excitement my usually predictable days.![]() ![]() First up was the TV Licence (excellent value for money IMO). Ok, so it's not very exciting, but it was part of my haul, so I included it for completeness' sake. What that TV Licence does mean is that it is coming up for four years since we moved in to our flat and had a "putting Ikea furniture together and watching Eurovision" party (pics of that here, here and here). It really doesn't seem like that long. It's also worth saying that there is nowhere near that much space in our flat any more! ![]() Next up was my Graze Box, which was supposed to arrive on Thursday, but got stuck in the post somewhere and actually turned up on Friday instead. It was yummy - especially the fresh apple, which appeared not to have suffered from being in the post an extra day :) If you want a free first box and half price second box (you can easily cancel after the free one has turned up), then go to graze.com and enter the following code: QV67PBDC. ![]() Last in the stack of post, a set of 15 War films given away in editions of the Daily Mail a month or so ago. Huge thanks to ![]() Finally for this post, I took the above today of my favourite bear Max posing with EDIT: On the theme of geekiness, my new laptop should hopefully be showing up on Tuesday. If you've not voted in my name poll, I'd appreciate it if you would :) |

| Feb. 5th, 2009 @ 04:05 pm Foreword suitability fail? When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit | |||
|---|---|---|---|
|
I've recently been reading my brand new copy of When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (my old one, that I had had since I was 8 or so, fell apart from being read rather a lot). I got my new copy through the My edition has a foreword called "Why You'll Love This Book" by Michael Morpurgo, Children's Laureate from 2003-2005. Bear in mind, when reading what comes next that this book is recommended for ages 8-12. His style in writing the foreword suggests that he is talking to these young readers. The fifth paragraph starts: "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, published forty years ago, speaks to us of a time most of us know only through books of history and fiction, through archive film, as well as through movies. It is from The Diary of Anne Frank to I am David and Schindler's List and The Pianist that most of us have our haunting but distant insights into the lives of those who had experienced the terrors and horrors of Nazi persecution and extermination..." I understand that 8-12 year olds may well have read the former two (The Diary of Anne Frank and I am David) - I know I had read at least one of those at that age (Anne Frank), having both a taste for the historical and something of a fascination with all things WWII (and Holocaust - I think I was a rather odd child). However, I highly doubt they have seen the latter (Schindler's List and The Pianist), not least because they're both rated 15. Don't get me wrong, they're both right up there as favourite films, I think they're amazing. But they're definitely not for children of the age the book is primarily aimed at. I dunno. That part of the foreword just felt rather odd. Surely, given the writer's status as a former Children's Laureate, he would be aware of what a child of that age has been exposed to, and what they haven't? |

| Mar. 29th, 2008 @ 04:11 pm Trying to find a film - please help :) | |||
|---|---|---|---|
|
I saw a film on one of the terristrial channels some years ago, and I can only remember the barest facts about it. Ben looks at me like I'm completely insane when I try and describe what I can remember of the film. I'm hoping that someone who reads this can help. Or maybe confirm Ben's suggestion that I'm insane ;) The film was about a guy who had died and was in ?purgatory (possibly not the right word). He had a review of his life, which happened in a sort of private cinema (his life events were shown as on film) and his life was shown to be generally wasted. While he was there he met (or re-met) a woman he was attracted to. Her life was shown to be generally good. At the end, they're put on busses to go on to the next stage - his is destined to go back to earth so he can try again and she to go on to heaven. He breaks off his bus and jumps on hers. The authorities decide to let him go on with her. Possibly because they were so touched by the love story ;) Anyway, please help. Either I'm insane, I have a great imagination or it is a real film I really saw. In which case, please tell me it's real and if possible what it is called? Thanks :) |

| Mar. 22nd, 2008 @ 10:20 pm Life needs a soundtrack | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| I've just been watching The Day After Tomorrow on 4, and realised how much easier life would be if it had an obvious soundtrack. Romantic movements when you meet someone you should fall in love with, big dramatic surges when something exciting happens, ominous music when you're in a bad situation, or meet a dodgy character - because of the music you would know what to do in every possible life situation! Also, it'd be really cool :D |

It's quite cool. I've seen films I've wanted to see but haven't got around to (Hairspray, Letters from Iwo Jima) and ones that I haven't seen for ages (Regeneration, Carry on Teacher), and series that I was curious about but couldn't afford the box sets of (House). The House is being staggered - one part of a series to every two films in my list on average, because otherwise its formula ( House formula ) annoys the hell out of me. In small doses it's fun though. Do any of you have any film/tv series recommendations to add to my list? :) I'm looking forward to this weekend. Liz and Si's housewarming. Get to see lots of people I haven't for a while. Should be fun :) |

| Feb. 2nd, 2008 @ 11:27 pm Sweeney Todd | |||
|---|---|---|---|
|
Sweeney Todd was excellent. When it comes out on DVD I shall have to get it again. Interestingly, the death that made me cringe the most and hide behind my hands for was the one I didn't see coming until right before it happened. I would say go see it - so long as you're not bothered by blood (fake or otherwise) or would be uncomfortable with the fact it was mostly sung. I really enjoyed it. Had dinner in Frankie and Bennies after, which almost didn't happen as the cash machines building at the complex had been the scene of a bulldozer cashpoint robbery - the building it was in was virtually demolished on the side where the machines used to be and surrounded by police tape. A word of warning to anyone going to the cinema at Ashford anytime soon - take plenty of money, for you won't be able to withdraw any while you are there! (Wish I'd known that! :}) Finally, a quick reminder: I'm going to the Tuesday 1:50pm showing of St Trinians and I'm willing to take other people - let me know if you want to go :) |

Thanks to those who expressed their opinion earlier :) I'm beginning to feel a bit better about it, not quite so mortified. I've decided to go see St Trinian's at Ashford on Tuesday, the 13:50 showing. As it's a tuesday, tickets are £4.40 each. As I'm going, I'm happy to take any Canterbunnies who are free then and want to go to a value of 3 or 4 if you want to squish together ;) Just comment below. I'll probably be leaving at 13:15. Tonight I'm off to see Sweeney Todd. Hurrah. I declare this Cinema Week! |

| Jan. 25th, 2008 @ 01:30 pm NPower | |||
|---|---|---|---|
|
I must be feeling better because today I was feeling well enough to mess with people's heads. Yesterday we got a letter from NPower saying that if we took our Gas supply as well as our Electricity from them then we could have an £80 discount per year from them. This was actually something of a problem, given that we do not have a Gas feed - we are purely Electricity only. It struck me as unfair that because our flat is rather backward we don't get an £80 discount on our fuel bill. So today, because I was feeling rather troublesome I called NPower and spoke to one of their Customer Representatives (who even appeared to be in a call centre in this country). I explained to him the problem and promised him that if we were to have a gas supply then we would get our supply from them. His response was something along the lines of "you what?!" I argued my case to the best of my ability but in the end had to settle for NPower taking us off their dual fuel mailing list and sending us out details of some boiler guarentee thing which gets us £20 off per year. Ah well. It was worth it just to mess with someone's head ;) Bwhahahaa. ION: Sky appear to have sorted their Heath Ledger tribute with 10 Things I Hate About You appearing magically on Sky Anytime today with a description saying practically that. |

| Jan. 1st, 2007 @ 06:07 pm A day in town and "The Pianist" | |||
|---|---|---|---|
|
A successful day today I think, despite a lack of sleep caused by late night and early morning. Or rather, early morning and early morning ;) Ben and I went to town as I had a need for some new slippers and it seemed like a most excellent time to spend our Christmas vouchers. I would say "and our Christmas money", but we spent that on a new TV (19" w/s Samsung LCD of joy and happiness) - no more flicker for us! :D Ben came back with several CDs he's been joyfully ripping all afternoon and I got a book (The Children's War: The Second World War Through the Eyes of the Children of Britain) and a DVD (The Pianist), which I sat and watched this afternoon while ben ripped his CDs. It was seriously intense. More intense, uncomfortable and in some ways visceral and graphic than Schindler's List which is a film in a similar vein (and one of my all time favourite films). It was an amazing film of an amazing story - that of Władysław Szpilman, a Jewish concert Pianist who lived in Warsaw, eventually escaped the Ghetto after a very narrow shave and lost his whole family to Treblinka. I highly recommend seeing this film, it's a definate must see. Just don't expect it to be pleasant viewing. |

I've got a cold. I woke myself up totally at 4:30 this morning coughing and haven't been able to go back to sleep yet. I decided, at some point (perhaps half past 6?) to look at the TV listings for today, a bank holiday. BBC1 will use the afternoon to show The Sound of Music, and simultaneously ITV will show Zulu. I have been moved to wonder, just what kind of bank holiday would it be without these films? Would the TV companies even have anything to show? The only thing missing today is The Great Escape. I think they showed that at Easter ;) |

Mostly feeling:
Philip proposed this morning that we watch a film together and chose Gattaca, a film I really love. I was reminded of the first time I watched it. I hadn't managed to see it in the cinema so I brought it on Video. Phil was at school, mum was at work, and I sat down to watch it. I found I loved this film. It was a beautiful portrayal of a man changing his stars and at the same time a frightening vision of a future which could happen. I didn't expect the identity of the policeman, and certainly not the moving montage at the end showing the differeing fates of Eugene and Jerome. I rarely cry at films and yet at the end of Gattaca I found myself crying and then laughing at myself for doing so. It was at this point that Philip came home and I'm sure he thought I was quite, quite mad. And still it remains one of my alltime favourite films. If you haven't seen it I reccommend you do so, right now :PNow Playing: Gattaca |

Never been to a concert before, bit nervous. Saw new Bridget Jones yesterday and had pizza hut. Bridget Jones good, but not as good as the original :( Too many cringworthy moments that the original just didn't have. I console myself with the thought that the second book was weaker than the first too ;) Looking forward to a good month of cinema - want to see The Phantom of the Opera (though cos it's good to just so I can criticize I don't know). Also want to see Churchill: The Hollywood Years (a pisstake of usual hollywood interpretations of our history, starring Christian Slater). Ok. I'm done :) |

Got back on Monday night and was in temper with the world. Had tooken part in a flame war of much flaminess on ukc.misc where I was repeatedly called a racist. I was annoyed, and not just cos o fthe accusations. I'd gotten so involved in the flame war that I wasted 5 hours in which I was going to do dissertation stuff. Got annoyed with ben, choir seemed to suck and I started to lose my voice. In short, monday wasn't good day.Now Playing: Faure: Requiem - Libera Me Yesterday was bit better. Up early for work (urgh) and managed to manage my time so badly I didn't have time for breakkie and then struggled up the hill. Work wasn't bad inna morning, then went to Uni where I...umm...I wasted time till 10, then had Lighthouse breakfast with ben and Rah (and thi I didn't think Iit was possible, it has gone downhill *again* recently) then wasted time till lunch which ben and I had in the gulob and then off to my 1pm leccie. We saw A Canterbury Tale which I thought was mostly boring, tho the canterbury bits were good, cos it shows the city as it was then, bomb damage and all. Work not bad, scurried off as soon as children dropped. Had chicken rice and pie for dinner and watched CSI with ben. Was lovely :) Today was module registration day. Went in and wasted an hour on computers and then had coffee. I stayed in Gulb after buying numerous cups of hot chocolate and fruit tea so I wouldn't get chucked out. Did some dissertation reading (finally!) and took a couplea pages of notes and quotes. Went to register for my special subject (double weighted final year history module). There are half a dozen or so subjects each with about 12 places and competition is fierce for the popular ones and the one I wanted was popular. It's about WW1 and the national psyche and is run by Mark Connelly whom I quite like anyway :) Also registered for my other subjects, both 100% coursework, both about museum work. Woo :D Lunch with ben and then work. Which was...interesting. The children tried to kill themselves by crossing the Whitstable Road on their own. When I reached the kerb they were already half way across. They did this without looking both ways. The Whistable Road, is, as Canterbury people know, a very very busy road. I was livid and told them off then made them sit cross legged on the floor when they got hom. Then I told their parents. If anything had happened it would have been *my* fault, regardless of if they were being stupid or not. No bikes tomorrow is punishment but their father was also considering grounding. Good. Jacket tatoes and cheese and sausages for dinner tonight. Wooooo :D ( ni! ) |

ThursdayNow Playing: Queen Greatest Hits Platinum Edition Well, I got up with the birdies again...really need a decent lie in. Took mum to work and Philip to school then drove to Reigate where i accidentally parked in a mother and baby spot. Realised when all my stuff was out of the car and it was locked and feeling far too lazy to move it so i left it there with a man, probably an asylum seeker or illegal immigrant or something washing it. And shopped. Wandered into a lot of shops and spent 1 and a half hours total in book shops. The majority of that time was in Reigate Galleries, the second hand book shop there. It is highly reccommended! Then i jibbled to college to say hi to people there. I met Steve, my old politics teacher with bohemian hair he has no intention of cutting and an odd goatee. Wish I could plait his hair...bah! Anyway, he suggested i come back at 12.20 and he'd treat me to a coffee while we nattereed about schtuff so I went and moved the car cos my 3 hours in Safeways Car Park were up. ALso got the Turkey - took almost 10 mins tho apparently I got the right one in the end so everyone was happy. Moved the car which had been given a warning ticket (if i do it again i'll get a proper ticket...) and parked in the station and wandered over to college where I met Nick who talked to me for 5 mins and showed me the shiny computers in the new block. Then I gave him my msn... Talked to Steve, he brought me a hot chocolate and we exchanged news. I asked him the question that had bugged our class for an entire year. Is he gay? I got a straight answer. Straight being the operative word. Which means I was in the losing half of the class. BAH! Anyway went home for an hour and fell asleep, was nearly late for picking Phil up from school but got there just before the bus so was ok. Then got mum and went home where I watched tv and played on the net and irc. Found out my friend was talking to me again and went to bed happy and fairly early iirc...about 2am... Friday Did all my morning driving the parked in Croyson for a day's shopping. Met Laura at 9am and spent 7 hours shopping. Was very tired by the end of it but had to go see lotr ttt with Phil so went out into cold wet again to the Grants cinema. Decided that next time I go to the cinema I'm going to Crawley. Sure it's further but the tickets are cheaper and the adverts only 10 minutes long. I had to sit through TWENTY FIVE minutes of them! grrr.... Still, film confirmed as fantastastic in my mind and before it started i had wandered into Thorntons and met an old school friend and talked to him for a bit. Got back, played on irc but was sent to bed at about 12.30 by skel with ending every sentence with "go to bed"...that's about it...bah! Friday was horrible really. Least I got most of my Christmas shopping done... Saturday Got up early and went to Croydon with mum, beating the crowds. Finished the Christmas shopping - YAY, joy of joys! - and brought the dvd player that i part own. £50 of mine, £50 of mums and £50 of Auntie Pat's. It's a pressie for the house really... Anyway, got back and tried to set it up excapt I found I had tooo many scart leads and not enough sockets if I wanted to keep vcr hooked up. Told the people on #jibblers about it and the lovely nert suggested I get a multiple scart thingy. I didn't even know they existed but at his suggestion I grabbed Phil and made for the Purley Way. Never been there before on my own so I got a headache trying to negotiated it but made it to Curry's where we picked up this magical device for only £10.99. Then we wandered round pc world for an hour or so and then came home where I spent 10 minutes figuring out how to connect everything so it all worked then. And now it does! Yay! Thanks again nert! Phil and I took internet play in turns then I took him to youth club and snuggled up with mamma to watch Casualty and Deizel and Pascoe tho had to leave before the end to get Philip from youth club. bah! At least it concludes tonight so I didn't miss the very end. Mum, who has read the book, told me the murder anyway! BAH! Wished pagan friends a happy Yule and then we all jibbled about schtugg on irc until gone 3am. It was really useful tho and I enjoyed it in the end. Let spill some stuff...not sure wether to regret that or not... Anyway, mutal help session and I had a glass of wine and a bowl of coco pops and a packet of chocolate coins. How glam! That's a pretty full account of the last 3 days anyway. Just want to add some stuff however: 1)my 'pooter case has arrived apparently - yay! Just have to wait for the rest of the bits thos skel has me thoroughly worried. He says he'll watch and tell me how to do it but that *I* have to build it...eek! 2) I miss the minkees esp creature cos he hasn't been online since the end of term and 3) I miss my Pete! Talk to him on irc but not the same... :( Anyway, a belated happy Yule to those pagans among you and Merry Christmas to those that are Christian. For those of you undecided about religion and schtuff I say hope you're enjoyining your hols. :) More soon (hopefully)... |

The brought him home, had 20 mins on the 'pooter then went to Laura's. She was in the bath when I got there...oops! Anyway, git away from her's at 5.40, got to crawley at 6.15. Got tickets from the prepay machine then she paid for her ticket by way of a macdonalds. The went and watched the film. WOW! Fantastic!
