Firstly I feel I should mention the US election. Yay! Obama won! :D I wanted him to win, and have thrown aside my cynicism for now to become really excited by a politician. A terribly important milestone too - the first black president of the USA :D I hope he could be like Kennedy for my generation. Except for the sleaze. And the Assassination. Definitely don't want those bits. So maybe not like Kennedy, maybe more like staying as awesome as he seems now when he's actually President.

The less said about Prop8 in Cali and an organisation I was formerly a member of, the better.

Now that's out of the way, two rather important milestones happened to me today.

I. I turned 25 sometime around midday today. I suppose I'm now officially on the wrong side of 25 now ;) . I have had a lovely day, and got some lovely presents and cards. Huge thanks to everyone who has wished me a happy birthday so far :) (Various on irc, some via text, [info]alisondh and [info]moonhot97 on lj, and a couple via facebook). Thank you all - they were really appreciated.

II. My final appointment with Nikki the Mental Health nurse was today, and we talked over some stuff about keeping well, dealing with triggers, preventing relapse and what to be aware of in terms of signs that I might be relapsing. Also lots of stuff about rebuilding trust in myself and my wellness, so one bad day doesn't panic me or those close to me. I'm told this is pretty much the last thing that comes back. I'm feeling pretty positive tonight at least, and I'll be happy if I maintain this level of okayness for a year. If I do, then comes the Big Scary of coming off the pills. But that's in the future. I want to use this space now to thank everyone who has supported me over the last 18 months or so. I couldn't have done it without you guys, whether you are aware of having helped or not. Now the Black Dog is banished to his Kennel. I hope he stays there.

So for tonight I'm celebrating two huge milestones for me - being 25 and being discharged from the Mental Health team. Yay! Come celebrate with me :D Drinks on someone else!

Why is it that the night before you have to get up super early it always seems particularly difficult to get to sleep? And last night I had trouble staying asleep too. Not funny, whoever's fault it is! I'm specifically looking at you, $deity!

Anyway, I'm off to London today (have to be on a train in less than 50 minutes to be there on time) to my edexcel moderation day (yes, I'm marking for them again this year!), after which, assuming I'm not dead, I'm hopping over East London way to see [info]kimble and [info]barakta. I know I'm an old hand at this, as I remembered to ask for a receipt when buying my train tickets so I can fill in and submit the expenses claim there and then. *Awards gold star to self for being organised like that*

It should all be quite nice, assuming I can stay awake :)

Have a nice day everyone :)

I went to Wildwood (again) the other day (this time with [info]rahslowe and her sister, Hannah) and got some more animal pictures, quite different from the ones last time because most of the Animals weren't co-operating. Pictures here. Best picture was of an American Bullfrog, I'm quite pleased with it. Pity about the grass that kind of got in the way of my shot.

The other thing that happened to me recently was a mobile phone upgrade. I was due for my upgrade a couple of weeks ago but put it off till yesterday, and had the weirdest and easiest upgrade ever (which is why I'm writing about something so mundane :p)

My current phone is a Sony Ericsson W300i and I've been very happy with it for the most part, but it's 18 months old, scratched and generally looking and starting to behave like a phone that's 18 months old (unimportant bits falling off it and such).

Anyway, I decided to pull my finger out yesterday and call T-Mobile (who I've been with for nearly 6 years now on contract, and four years before that on PAYG, and part of that was when they were still One2One). What can I say, I'm really happy with them, always had excellent customer service from them, and not had any problems with coverage - when I was first with them they were the only ones with signal covering my mum's house (necessary since I was living there at the time).

I got through to customer services very quickly and asked about an upgrade. A very chirpy scotsman confirmed I was due, and said I was a high value customer to them, and as such he wasn't going to offer me any deals - I should just say what I wanted and he would make it happen. So I said I was after the Sony Ericsson W890i, which according to T-Mobile's website should cost me about £50. He said I could have it for free, then gave me a discount off my bill (£4 a month) without me asking. Win :D I was really surprised, but very impressed with their customer service, which for me was impeccable. So I'm writing this all down, to act as a record for just how pleased I am with them and why.

My new phone should arrive on Tuesday morning. Mmm, shiny :)

In other news, I've been very busy this week, doing something every day (including seeing [info]bethanthepurple twice! hello bethan!). It makes me aware that while I am doing much better, I'm still not there yet - being out for two hours or over makes me so tired I just have to come home and crash. At least I'm handling getting out every day, and that is definite progress.

I've also been watching a lot of dvds, as mum got me a dvd service subscription for Christmas. It's quite cool. I've seen films I've wanted to see but haven't got around to (Hairspray, Letters from Iwo Jima) and ones that I haven't seen for ages (Regeneration, Carry on Teacher), and series that I was curious about but couldn't afford the box sets of (House). The House is being staggered - one part of a series to every two films in my list on average, because otherwise its formula House formula ) annoys the hell out of me. In small doses it's fun though. Do any of you have any film/tv series recommendations to add to my list? :)

I'm looking forward to this weekend. Liz and Si's housewarming. Get to see lots of people I haven't for a while. Should be fun :)

Hiding out here: CT2
Mostly feeling: tired
Now Playing: Dancing on Ice
I got a call recently from a family friend, John Morris. He was the only mormon who ever really kept touch with our family after daddy died and over the years he took me and Phil to lots of Charlton games (including the memorable 1998 playoff final at Wembley) because they were the team he supported and it was something he could do for us. As a result I became practically the only child in Croydon to support Charlton. Most of my schoolmates supported Crystal Palace. Oh the stick I got for it!

Anyway, I hadn't been to a game in years when John called and asked if I would want to go to a game if he could arrange it. I replied in the affirmative and he got tickets for him, me and Phil to see Charlton at home against Palace on 8th February. I made arrangements accordingly - to stay with [info]kimble and [info]barakta at their place near Stratford so I could tube and bus it to Charlton.

Found my way to where I was staying relatively easily - ben has turned his free (from a competition) Nokia N770 into a tomtom like GPS toy, so it guided me once I was away from my familar territory of the Blackwall Tunnel (I can get to that easily - from there though I get lost unless I'm going to Telehouse at East India Docks).

I was made very welcome by [info]kimble and shown all the shiny flashy lights and scrolly signs that they have set up. Some of the things would be so helpful in our hearing household as well as their are in their deaf one - a flashy light when a reminder comes up so I wouldn't miss it if I were afk would be amazing. I took down notes of which tubes and busses I needed to get to where I wanted to go and headed out.

Made it to North Greenwich Tube Station ok, and boarded the bus I needed for Charlton in plenty of time - there was an hour to go until Kick Off. Unfortunately, it was rush hour and I ended up in the middle of a crowd away from any windows being squished and I missed my stop. Being unfamiliar with the area, and unable to see anything because of aforementioned squish I didn't realise until the bus thinned out a good half hour later. In the end, I had to ride the bus to the end of the route and then come back on the same one. I had ben tell me where to get off (he was following my route on a bus map because I'd called him in tears and unable to cope) but the driver failed to stop at the right stop and I ended up going one too far. *sigh* Eventually made it into the ground as the half time whistle blew. Phil and John were utterly amazing and lovely and had waited for me outside even though it meant they missed the first half too.

Second half was brilliant. I'd been lucky and not missed any goals. The final score was 2-0 to Charlton and both goals were scored in the second half when I was there to see. Hurrah! I enjoyed myself very much and so John is going to see about taking Phil and I to another game in two or three months.

Going back, John and Phil escorted me to to North Greenwich incase I got lost again (or attacked, which I think at least was John's overriding concern), and made it back to Stratford where [info]barakta met me to make sure I got off at the right stop for their place. Just as well - the crush on that bendy bus was as bad as the double decker earlier and I wouldn't have had a clue if she hadn't been there and would probably have ended up in Ilford!

I was taken back and fed curry and felt much more human. Then we talked and spodded until very late (I can't remember when I last went to bed that late). It was lovely and so were they :D

Coming back on Saturday was much easier than going (though I almost got my windscreen cleaned at traffic lights) and stopped at Bluewater for Krispy Kreme donuts to bring home and also had lunch. Unfortuantely, I also had a Lush shaped accident (the accident looked like this, this and this), but concluded due to general business and lack of parking (there were places being used as parking spaces that I didn't know could accomodate a car) that I am never venturing to Bluewater again on a Saturday unless it is a matter of life or death. Even then, it will depend on whose life is in danger...

Despite the fact that Kimble and Barakta had been lovely, what I saw of the football had been good, and I'd got some nice things in Bluewater, I was more relieved than I can express to get home again.

In conclusion, some notes on London Transport.
1) Busses at rush hour are horrible. Especially if you're short.
2) My foot is not the same as a brake. You have them on your child's buggy, please use them. My foot does not appreciate the fact that you apparently failed to notice the difference.
3) Bendy busses are the spawn of satan and must be stopped. I didn't know it was possible for a bus to be so crowded. It was more like a tube train than a bus (and busses jerk around way way more :S).
4) Driving may be expensive and complicated in London but I think I would rather drive in future than be half crushed and killed on a bus.

Jan. 1st, 2008 @ 07:54 pm Weighted Companion Cube Cake
Hiding out here: CT2
Mostly feeling: accomplished
Now Playing: Weezer: My Name is Jonas
Ever since Portal came out in Mid October last year, my husband [info]benc has been more or less obsessed with Moist Delicious Cake and The Weighted Companion Cube which are both "components" of the game. His Weighted Companion Cube Plushie arrived just before Christmas and he fell in love with it. I decided to make him a cake for his birthday on Friday. I'd been toying with the idea since the game had first come out in October, but with the arrival of the plushie version I had a 3D model I could copy. Today me and my friend [info]rahslowe got down to work and spent the day making a Weighted Companion Cube Cake.

First we went shopping for the necessary articles with which to make cake. No mean feat, given today was new years' day and only Sainsbury's was open (Morrisons and Asda being shut) and even Sainsbury's had very little in the way of what we needed. Luckily we just got more expensive stuff and managed to get everything we wanted.

The cake ingredients

and the icing ingredients.

First we made two basic sponge cakes. The recipe we used was simple and easily scalable- 1 egg to 2 ounces of everything else. We used three eggs so the quantities were:
3 eggs
6oz Caster Sugar
6oz Butter
6oz Flour

We chose to be masochists and mixed the cake by hand, then cooked it in Rah's rectangular Lasagne dish as we felt it was a suitable size. While the first cake was cooling we made the second cake. As the second cake was cooling we began to construct the cube. First we cut the first cake in half and stuck the halves together with Jam (strawberry, but you could use any that took your fancy). We used the second cake to continue the construction, also cutting it in half and sticking all the bits together with strawberry jam. Then we trimmed the sides to a greater or lesser extent to make a cube shape of what was left.

The offcuts.

The naked Companion Cube.

While various parts were cooking and cooling we made templates from cardboard to cut into the icing around so we had the right shapes to decorate the cube with.

The templates with the plushie version which we were copying.

Next came the really messy bit - making the icing! We used a large box of ready to roll royal icing and icing sugar to act as "flour" and stop the icing from sticking to the work surface. We added black food colouring sparingly to make varying shades of grey and some pink food colouring to make the hearts. These got covered in white icing sugar in the process of colouring and rolling it out, but a pastry brush and water took care of that and restored them to the colours they were supposed to be. To use the templates, just lay them out on top of the icing on your worktop and use a sharp knife to cut around them (much as you would with a pastry cutter). The thin lines of pink were writing icing. The hardest bit was getting the bottom layer of icing the right shade of grey and long and wide enough to cover the entire cube. Then we used water to stick the pieces of icing which had been cut from the templates onto the bottom layer. The consistency when wet was something like wet clay.

Eventually it was done, but wet so we left it to dry while we cleared up the terrifying mess we had created.

Finally it was more or less dry and looked like this:

mmm, caek )

Unfortunately we only managed to make half a companion cube out of cake, but we're already making plans for next time, one of which (suggested by Ben) is to make two half cube cakes and serve them one on an orange plate and one on a blue plate. If you have played portal you will get the reference ;)

All pictures of the event can be found here. I recommend getting a friend to help you, it would have been much harder without Rah's help. Thanks Rah and Happy Birthday Ben :)

Please note before I start that though it may not seem like it, I do not actually spend much time bitching about my depression, especially here.

I fucking hate my fucking illness. I woke up this morning in a good mood despite my inability to sleep properly (trouble getting to sleep and then staying asleep. 4am and I are becoming well aquainted and according to the pharmacy I can't have any over the counter drugs to help, so I guess I'd better speak to Dr K :/). I enjoyed the drive to my mum's (the weather was such that driving was really fun) where I abandoned Ben and then headed to my first CBB gather. Everyone was very nice and I had fun, but I came out ready to cry having made a really rather hasty getaway. I think I overdid it and to use a [info]baraktaism (hopefully correctly) I think I just ran out of spoons at the end/did not have enough spoons to do what I was attempting to. Managed to calm down on the walk to the station and did not cry, but really really pissed with myself.

The gather itself was nice. People were lovely and I met lots of new people (everyone) who were all very welcoming and friendly and we ate lots of varied food (Lizzie-friendly rockyroad [no nuts :D], crispy cakes, sausage rolls [turns out there is such a thing as too many sausage rolls]) and lots of other stuff. I spent lots of time hiding behind a lovely large cushion cos I was freaked and talked too much about many things, lots of which probably weren't appropriate. Next time I shall try to be more Sotto ;) Played some games - the present game and an articulate type thing but with CBB words. The team I was on won, but that was largely down to the scary Chalet knowledge of Xanthe and Liss, then I ran away cos I was tired and getting panicky.

In all, it was really nice and I'd do it again, but maybe I should wait until I'm more betterer. Or something.

Have a meme I stole from [info]greenfurrymoose. Ben also did it and is pretty much the exact opposite.

I have to admit I'm impressed. Or possibly more shocked. After I emailed edexcel two days ago (after the yelling ranty call to the tax office following major incompetence and stuff) I expected very little in the way of either cooperation, speed or competence and this morning my statement of earnings turned up. It's even been signed by a real person! I'll be taking a photocopy of that then before I send it off to be eaten up by HM Revenue and Customs. Still, as I said, I'm impressed. It seems the key to dealing with edexcel is to set your sights and expectations very low and then they may actually impress you!

In other news, I went to curry to celebrate Adam's birthday (on Tuesday evening), which was lovely. I also met up with Oziris for coffee (on Wednesday), which we must do more often and today I looked after Sue's baby, John, who is delightful and lovely and not terribly hard work (or at least wasn't today) - the best part is having a nice time and handing him back afterwards! Finally tonight foo and rah came round and we had uber lasagne of doom. Yum.

Now I'm off to bed - I have a counsellor's thing tomorrow, preceeded by a gulbenkian breakfast :D Atfer that the day is mine. Any ideas? ;)

Now Playing: Various programmes from the BBC archive trial
As I mentioned in my last entry we went on holiday to Skegness/Chapel St. Leonards for a week in a fixed site caravan. We had a lovely time and selected photos are here and some different ones here. All photos were taken by [info]benc (I was taking black and white pictures on a film camera which have yet to be developed).

We did a fair bunch of stuff, though it was all sadly rather curtailed because the effects of my depression are such that after doing something for 3 or 4 hours I was so tired I had to come home and sleep. One of the things that we did that isn't in pictures is we drove an hour and a half to Stamford so we could see The Dam Busters (which had been cleaned up a little) on the big screen. Well worth it :D though I was dead almost all of the next day.

When we went to Skegness we saw the Skegness lifeboat with its awesome tractor which pulls it down the beach to the sea and pulls it back out again:

It was sooooo cool :D

I won a zippy toy at the "Hook a Duck" stall on Skegness pier and he "did" Skegness:

In Chapel St. Leonards we found possibly the most offensive building in all of the UK, the Golden Palm:

The pictures don't do it justice - the palm trees *flashed*. The shopping arcade owned by the Golden Palm also produced the worst curry I have ever had - sauce like water, sweetened with sugar and chicken so dry it had probably been sitting under lights for hours. The curry places around Skegness were all very special. None of the ones near to us did "Curry". They all did Curry/Kebabs/Pizzas/Burgers. Really we should have known better than to buy from there.

On our last day we went to the beach, as it was the only day really nice enough for it.

I buried Ben:

We worked on a sandcastle:

Which had a working moat :D

Thus, our work was done:

(Mine is the blue spade).

Finally, ben brought me a giant Eeyore for an anniversary present:

He's pretty awesome :)

Today I have called the Job Centre plus in an effort to apply for Incapacity benefit as advised to me by Payroll at UKC. It seems very complicated and I have no idea if I'll be eligable but I don't loose anything by applying. I have also been abusing the BBCs archive trial and now have about 12 tabs of things to watch. Ah well, will keep me busy!

And finally, the reason I chose the icon I did: we got back from holiday to a letter from our Letting Agency saying they'll be coming to inspect the flat for the first time in two years on Thursday. It's a routine inspection but I'm bricking it and utterly convinced we'll be evicted despite saner voices telling me I'm being a muppet. I'm sure on Thursday I'll be able to come back and tell you all that they were right. Until then I suspect I'll be a bit of a nervous heap.

It's a been a nice few days despite the fact that I hate my job and my computer, Aragorn, is misbehaving - it kernel oopses and locks up when data is being pushed at it over the network (but not pulled). After changing the hard disks, power supply, network card and network cable we ran memtest and a few minutes ago the screen lit up red with errors. I think we may have just tickled the problem ;) I hope it's that simple - if it's not it means an upgrade of motherboard, ram and processor we can ill afford (who can?!)

The first nice thing was that Liz and Si came to Canterbury for a rare visit and between them, me and [info]benc and pao we sacrificed a couple of duck and many pork dumplings at Cafe de China which I don't think I've been to since my birthday in November. Yum.

Once the duck had been well and truly sacrificed pao went home to tend to mrspao who is ill :( (get well soon!) and Liz and Si came to our local pub, The Dog, Rough Common (which has improved immensely under new management) and played a couple of games of pool and drank beer (or in Si's case, pisswater :P).

This evening we met up with [info]fooflington and [info]rahslowe on the beach for some fish and chips. Rah was mad and went in the sea :P Later on Laura, Jase and Laura's sister Lizzie came along too and there was more sea-ness by Rah and Laura. A little later as it was getting cold and dark (and feeling like April again instead of June) Foo, Rah, Ben and I went to the pub where the men drank beer (Whitstable Bay and Early Bird) and we played pool. Rah and I lost badly :(

So anyway, now I smell of smoky pub, which is bad, but I've had a couple of lovely days with my friends so I really don't mind.

Thanks guys :)

Happy Easter to those who believe. I hope it's been a good one :)

I have spent a very relaxing day pottering about our (newly spring cleaned and rearranged - epic effort lasting 3 days and 12 sacks of stuff to be got rid of [an lj post in itself]) flat, pottering up to a friend's house to feed a bunny, then on to the fields beyond to look at the lambs (fitting for Easter Sunday I feel). Came home and listened to our official downloaded copy of the BNL concert we went to only a week and a bit ago and read Blood, Sweat and Tea lent to me by [info]no1typo while keeping an eye on irc. Now [info]benc is cooking dinner (Cardamom and Honey Chicken with CousCous) and it smells lovely. Not a bad way at all to spend an afternoon :) I feel very relaxed now!

I have few eggs this year as compared to other years (medium Chocolate Orange one from Mum, a small smarties one and a cadbury's chick from Ben and a packet of minieggs from myself - added to later by two boxes of chocolates from Sue [Green and Blacks bitesize - Squeeeeeee {also some luxury chocs from someone I've never heard of, but they're very nice} and not one of the chocolates contains nuts! Yay! She's very clever :D]), but much to my suprise I haven't touched any of this stash of chocolate yet!

Maybe after dinner...

Total: 78 TBH it could be a couple either side of this - I don't trust my maths!

In other news, a Cinnamon Dolche Signature Hot Chocolate from Starbucks is lovely and will be joining a Signature Hot Chocolate with a shot of Vanilla (formerly the only entry) on my yummy hot drinks from Starbucks list :)

I'm off for a bath now followed by dinner (Ben's patented spag bol) and then some baby worship o/

Today I went to pick up the finished articles (that have been glazed and fired) from the shop and have taken pictures of them for your viewing pleasure. I also took a picture of the Vase I painted when I first went (the trip with Rah and Claire).

Yesterday [info]no1typo came to Canterbury and we had lunch in Burrito Bob's (excellent mexican takeaway and not nearly as busy as it should be. In case you live in Canterbury and you don't know where it is - it's next to Super Noodle on Northgate). From there we went to Espression which is just opposite Westgate Games.

Basically you go there and paint pottery. Lots of different items at lots of difference prices, the price you pay for teh item is all inclusive - for the item, the paint and the varnishing/firing process. I went before with [info]rahslowe and [info]claire_tanner and did a vase which turned out beautifully. This time I painted a mug. Mamma painted a little flower dish. We had a drink (her coffee, me hot choc with whipped cream :D) and painted. What a lovely (and fairly cheap) way to spend 2 hours :D

Pictures of the unfinished articles here.

In the evening we had Kudos. Nice day :)

An LJ post to welcome the newest member of the Holland family into the world. My friend Sue had her baby at 5:15 this morning, weighing 9lb2oz and with light brown hair. He turned up a day earlier than his due date, thus bucking the trend set by all three of his elder siblings.

I've been up all night, called to hers last night as I was about to go to bed and unable to sleep after that waiting for the all important "it's here" phone call :D

Decided to have today off work. So knackered I'd be no use, so breakfast and then sleep.

Course, this scuppers my "lunch with Sue" plan for today cos ben was in London. Well ben is still in London today and I suspect I will sleep through lunch ;)

I'm on an uber high and very excited :D

Anyway, welcome to the world John Andrew :D

So I went round to my friend Sue's yesterday evening, and her five year old son, Paul came over to talk to me. Sue asked him if he had any news he'd like to tell me. He looked puzzled. He thought for a moment, bounced up and down and then almost breathlessly said:

"Today at school I was a monitor and I got a sticker"

I looked suitably impressed (and a little amused, I must confess). Then Sue and I prompted him again - is there anything else he wanted to tell me?

Again he looked a little confused and looked over at his mum. Then he seemed to remember what it was he should tell me.

"Next week I'm going to the beach!"

Again, I tried to look suitably impressed, though I really wanted to giggle. Again we prompted him - is there any other news you want to tell me? He looked really confused this time. He went over to his mum and she whispered in his ear and finally he remembered.

"My mummy is pregnant and I'm going to have another brother or sister!"

I have it on good authority that the day before he was so excited he could barely contain himself. Bless him, 5 year olds are so cute!

So yes, my friend Sue is pregnant, and I have to admit that I'm actually quite excited too ;) I'm even knitting in my spare time! (spare time? What's that?)

In other news, I went to see X3 tonight. Judgement reserved until I've thought a little more about it. I was a little disappointed - I think the first two were better, but I shall think about it some more and perhaps issue a more measured judgement tomorrow ;)

You remember the story of me getting in contact with an old friend? Well the 29th May was her birthday so I toodled along to her house for the party. I had a lovely time, especially making use of the trampoline :P Piccies of that event (including me on the trampoline here.

My last shift with the children was on Friday morning and I got some of the most fun and beautiful presents I could ever have wished for. I got a bear and a thing full of hot chocolate and a game for two to play in the bath >:) The cards and letters were the worst though. I didn't cry when I was there but I came back home and *howled* about it all. PIctures of almost everything (including becky's letter which is by far the worst) are here.

My results were posted on the boards at the back of the library at 5pm on Friday. I swore I would not be involved in the scrum that ensues once the humanities guy turns up with the lists, but after a little encouragement from ben, there I was, right in the middle. I went back yesterday to preserve the result for posterity ;) I'm glad I won't have to do *that* wait ever again!

Samphire Hoe is where Ben and I went after I got my degree results. I was so full of nervous energy the walk did me good. It was really beautiful though Ben suffered because of the high concentration of pollen there. Well worth a visit. For more info see this.

Finally, yesterday I got round to setting up aragorn despite the lack of desk... Aragorn's new home is perched on top of two Dell boxes and another computer - see this picture for how unstable the whole arrangement actually looks ;)

Ok - all piccies done now - have a look, especially at the Samphire Hoe ones :)

*bumbles off*

Edit: I forgot to mention the lovely rainbow I saw a few days ago :) Go look! :D

I know most of you know already, but I'll post here anyway :)

I got a 2:1, which is what I wanted, so yay!

Scarily there was only one first in history and no thirds or passes - so we're all pretty average really ;)

For those of you who don't know the UK's way of classifying degrees at undergrad level:

A first is the best anyone can get
A 2:1 is next
followed by a 2:2
and a third
with a pass last. With a pass you don't get an honours degree if you're doing one.

After this comes fail :( *huggles pete* (what can I say - that result really threw me - it's left a kinda bitter-sweet thing hanging over yesterday. *more hugs*)

So anyway, I'm now Elizabeth Overal B.A. (hons)

It was very hot yesterday, 25 celcius and the air was quite stuffy. I just woke up to the sound of torrential rain outside and there's a lovely cool breeze with it. Everything is fresh and lovely :)

So, what does a geek do when it's too hot?

Well if that geek is me then they go out to the beach at Whitstable and then for a drive along the coast all the way to reculver. That geek will then take lots of pictures and have a generally lovely time exploring the Kent countryside.

My favourite picture.

Ben also took some pictures (lots and lots of them ;)). His are here. He has some really great ones of waves breaking. Take a look and you'll see what I mean :D

I also got other pics off my camera last night, including dinner at Supernoodles with the Monkeys and Ewan who I had never met before. He's certainly an *experience*. I quite liked him :) Before I met him I only knew him as the guy Allan taped into a phone box (the last frame, bottom row here.) Anyway, that was great fun :)

I also put up my pictures of a stray cat taht turned up at the kids house one day. It was a very sweet cat ;)

Tomorrow am off to London for Wedding Dress Fabric :O Quite excited. WIll be heading home tonight to [info]_44l (which contains my lovely mummy, [info]no1typo and my brother, [info]red_pill) tonight :D

Can't think of anything more to say so that's about it from me :P

I have been trying to get in contact with my best friend from primary school, Anna, for ages after we lost touch when her father got remarried and moved away. I've had very little luck as neither she, her father or her sister have entries on google. Finally in a last ditch effort I went to 192.com after reading about it in this BBC news article. I looked up her last name and the place I knew her last home was - Croydon. 192.com brought up a whole list of results that were tantilisingly close. It said she was living there somewhere with Chris and Lucasta but because I wasn't registered it wouldn't tell me where. So I registered and searched again and it didn't even give me that much information. I wondered why and it turned out that for me to see them I would have to pay 192.com for at least 100 credits - an outlay of £26. I wanted to see Anna, but not enough that I would pay all that money to this service. I didn't want 100 credits. I wanted 1. I would even have paid for 10, but 100 is way way way too much.

It was then I hit upon my marvellous idea.

I would google for the name of the person I assumed was Anna's stepmother.

I got one hit.

It was an email address.

I sent an email:

All this was Monday evening. Yesterday evening (tuesday) I got a call.

From Anna.

It was wonderful. We talked for ages (40-50 mins) and she will come to my wedding :D It turns out Lucasta was her stepmother and passed on my email.

Well I saw BNL[1] last night1[2] and I would just like to say, for the record...

DOOOOOOOOD!

It was really fantastic.

We saw them at the Shepherds Bush Empire playing on their Barenaked for the Holidays tour. It was my very first concert and Oh My God...it rocked.[3]

The opening act (whose name I have now forgotten...)[Edit]March 2007: His name was Boothby Graffoe apparently was very funny and Jim and Kevin came and played with him for a bit and that was so very cool. Then, after a half hour break BNL came on and opened with a couple of holiday songs (which made me a little nervouse as to the tone of the concert - their Holiday album isn't nearly as good as any of the others...) Anyway, I needn't have worried. They played a whole load of classics and very few of he Holiday ones so I was happy.

They are *amazing* in concert and so versatile. I was surprised at just how many instruments they could all play at least a little bit. I also kept thinking that Jim must have amazing calloses on his fingers from all the plucking at the base. Made the tips of my fingers ache just thinking about it[4] ;) I came out of the whole thing on an amazing high, and I don't think it was wholly the effects of the weed people all over the venue were smoking[5] ;)

My only gripe would have to be that, even with encores the thing didn't last long enough. More dammit!

I think I'll have to go see them again when they're next in the UK ;)

Thank you to all the lovely people who were there yesterday with me, especially my lovely fiance who brought my ticket and shared it all with me, and informed me that the funny smell in the venue was pot (I'd never smelled it before - I can certainly identify it now) and dmc who drove us back from Coulsdon where we caught the train and didn't get back till 3:20. His son then woke him up at 6:15. The lift was appreciated more than I can say ;)

Now I am awake after ooh - 4.5 hours of sleep, so no doubt I shall crash at some point during the day. At least when I do, I have that fantastic experience to think of :D

[1]Barenaked Ladies
[2]My birthday present from Ben
[3]My opinions could, or course, be distorted by the second hand weed I inhaled throughout the concert ;)
[4]As a violin player my experience of what plucking a bass lots can do to you is limited, but the effects must be at least a little similar... [edit] Just asked adam, and apparently double bass players do have amazing calloses on their fingers :)
[5]I want to make it clear that I didn't even try any :P I'd probably be sick if I did ;)

O.o

Very odd. Am now *old* ;)

Firstly I would like to thank everyone who wished me a happy birthday on IRC, LiveJournal, in Person, with cards etc. They were all muchos appreciated :D I got lots and lots of cava, and other such nice things. Got a beautiful necklace from my mummy, chosen with the help of [info]metamoof. The stones are (left to right, top to bottom) Peridote, Iolite, Blue Topaz, Garnet, Perl, Amethyst, Citrine, Iolite and Blue Topaz. From my brother I got some beautiful blue topaz earrings (again brought in Spain and transported to the UK by the everlovely [info]metamoof), and lots and lots of cava from various people (J and Beffan) :D. Ben brought me a ticket to see the barenaked ladies in London on the first weekend in december and a usb christmas tree O.o From foo and rah I got some excellent little presents (4 - one a day till my birthday). I got a flannel that expands on contact with water, a little refillable sqishy shower gel thing, bath confetti and a cat soap that grows fur! I also recieved the traditional gift of money from quite a few rellies. I have decided that, despite my yucky financial situation to keep the money for me this year. It's my 21st and I want to have things for me. I know this is reckless given my lack of funds (slightly lifted now - loan was finally paid in Thursday) but I will only ever have one 21st Birthday, so I am going to be selfish.

I have roughly £120 and am leaning towards a new piece of computer hardware and some books. What I'm thinking about getting is a fairly cheap (less than £60) DVD writer. Then the rest of the money can go on books. MMmmm Shiny. Reccommendations and opinions re. DVD writers appreciated :)

Birthday stuff spread out over the weekend, which was weird and left Sunday (my actual birthday) feeling rather anticlimatic, but I still had a nice time. Friday was all you can eat at cafe de china. Was lovely. Pork Dumplings are *excellent* :D Saturday was lunch at fish and chip place in Whitstable then Fireworks at tyler hill (sooooo cool :D) and soup back at mine afterwards. I even got a birthday message over the PA at the fireworks (the kids wouldn't stop talking about it this morning ;)) I also went on teacups :D Yesterday ben and I had lunch at the Jackdaw in Denton again, followed by a to Kent International Airport at Manston (a former RAF base) which feels seedy (like an airport in the middle of nowhere in the US which recieves one flight a day ;)), has no road signs pointing to the places you need to know about and charges you 60p for a small chocolate bar. The only upside is that we didn't get charged for parking (machines were being spacky). We got a beffan who had been staying with Moof and had much laughs and had a macdonalds dinner. A busy, fun weekend :)

In other news I've taken up knitting again (those who have known me for a while know I go through this phase once every couple of years and do it badly before getting bored and dropping it after two weeks). Things are going better and for the time being I'm trying to make a scarf. Knitting is good anti-irc therapy cos it keeps my fingers busy and not missing a keyboard.

I also have chosen the pattern for my bridesmaids dresses (thanks to [info]rahslowe). Now I just need to order it. Found out I cant sing in choir concert this term cos it's teh same day as Ben and Claire's wedding. I love singing but I'd much rather be at the Tanner's special day.

For of those of you who know about last year and are wondering about my mental health I'm still quite up and down - more up than down now, but I still have some bad days, usually triggered by a situation I can't deal with. Ben is very supportive and I'm definately beating this thing. One of my worst problems now is getting frustrated with myself that I'm not completely better now, I thought it would just go away when I was removed from the situation, which is not the case as those of you who have been ill with this will testify to. At least now I'm mostly up and hopefully with the help of my councellor I will beat it for good soon :)

Busy week coming up - two essays to research and write, a letter to write about volunteering in sue's school and I'm sure there's other stuff I meant to do. There are certainly some difficult decisions coming up. We'll just have to see what happens.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee......splat?

Well I'm in the Library starting off a new Uni year (for me) in traditional style with procrastination from my reccommended reading.

So..um..what is going on with me I hear you ask.

Not a lot is the answer (now you see why I've not updated for a while ;))

I finished work at Andrew Reeves (the posh Belgravia estate agents) tho my last day was slightly marred by the people at Victoria trying to give me a penalty fare. I got on the train without a valid ticket cos otherwise I would have missed my train, fully intending to pay when I got to Victoria. When I got there and went to pay for my return ticket I got pulled to one side and treated like a criminal cos it's (apparently, tho I didn't know this) an offense to get on a train without a ticket if the ticket office is open. SO they said I needed to pay a penalty fare even though I tried to explain I would have missed my train and been late for work. They just carried on saying I'd need to pay the penalty fare and it got too much and I started to cry. The guy looked at me like I was putting it on...and then to cap the indignity I started to hyperventalate big time. My head started to tingle and I couldn't stand up so I sat down and all teh time he's watching me like I'm faking it. Eventually the two ticket barrier guys come over and ask me what's up and I try to tell them while not being able to breathe and one of them brings me some water (which I nearly choked on cos my breathing was so irregular by this point) and they argued with the Penalty Fare guy about it and eventually let me ppay just for my return ticket. Evetually, when I was sufficiently calm to stand again I started to go and the Penalty Fare guy looks at me, glares and says "that won't work again you know". Like I was doing it on purpose >.< I can think of better places to make myself look undignified, stupid and immature...

Beffan met me from work that day tho, so things started to improve :) We scandalised the carrage of our train with our talk ;)

Anyway, I saw Phantom of the Opera on Monday evening and it was absolutely magnificent. At the end I felt so sorry for the Phantom. I didn't have a great view from the balcony so I want to go again and sit in the stalls. Still, it took my breath away. It was brilliant.

Les Miserables was Tuesday's show and that was even better than Phantom, and very different. I saw this one from the stalls and had a wonderful view, and at the end the show had a standing Ovation. I didn't like the Older Cosette, but JVJ and Javert were great and Marius...*happy sigh* It made me cry more than once. It was overwhelming.

Came back to canterbury on Saturday and left behind a whole shedload of stuff :o(

Beffan is staying ATM and that is great :D

Rah cooked a lovely roast beef dinner yesterday which was *YUMYUM* :D and today is her 1st wedding anniversary - the weather a year ago today was much much nicer ;)

Speaking of weddings, ben and I have talked to the Vicar who will marry us on Friday and booked the wedding for the 3rd September 2005 at 3pm. The most complicated question of the whole thing for me was "Are you baptised" which ellicited the response "yes, no, possibly, not sure, maybe?" (see my history as a mormon for further explanation ;))

Mum found something to stop herself getting bored over the weekend - taking piccies of piccies and putting them up on her site. These include baby pics of me and pill, which is the reason the link will *NOT* be included here ;)

Ben and I watched Battle of Britain yesterday - top film :D

Umm...I'm sure there's other stuff I ment to include and forgot, in which case I may add it later :)

I woke up in a good mood. I was on time for work...again...second morning in a row. I had nothing vitally important to do. Yet I still ended up getting very very down to the point where I found communication a problem. Made ben suffer through a lunch time with me and went and hid for an hour in a corner somewhere. Made myself go to work. Met ellie just as I was coming out of hiding place. She was concerened about me nad gave me a hug and said if I needed her I should call. It started to pull me up, but I spent most of the rest of the day just feeling empty and drained. I went to work and sat and froze for an hour while tom ran around so we could be lazy and didn't have to go back to the school for becky, illi, dani and alice (all of whom I take home on a thursday)

Work finished late, called mum and had a chat (she's bringing Phil down tonight for the weekend \o/) and then when I was halfway down the hill I called ben...then i went back to wait for him. I wasn't going to call him cos I thought he needed an evening off from me, but eventually did. He seemed pleased I came back anyway.

So...got back to ben's place and I checked my email...turns out that following my reasessment I only have to pay £744 in Tuition fees \o/ - the lea have to pay about 1/3 of them - which would mean that I'm definately eligable for more loan, so now I just have to wait for it to arrive, Thank God. Things have been a bit hairy of late, but now I can actually start paying off what I owe UKC and buying some books I need. *breathes sigh of relief*

Ben did chicken rice for dinner. Was nice. Stayed the night. Slept well...

Need to get dressed now... ;)

Today was really a mix of ups and downs and am feeling quite bouncy right now which is nice :)

Work was average and having dropped the kids at school I met ben and we went in together the rest of the way. I sat in his office for a bit then on a PPC for a bit. Rah came online and we chatted online for a bit, then met up and went to mungoes and talked some more which was all really jibbly. Added point one for today to my little book of positives which my doctor asked me to keep. Talking to rah made me feel happy.

I had lunch with her and foo and ben and that was nice. Got work done in afternoon then off to work where I started to suffer a mood drop which got steadily worse as the afternoon went on. I channeled it into something vaguely productive late evening then went and had snacks with ben (and made by the same :))

He went off on bus to town for beer and currage and I walked with him as far as eliot. Then I sat moaning cos I didn't want to go to choir for half an hour. But good things came of it.

I met Ellie.

She sat next to me totally by chance and wasn't feeling very well. We got talking and I said I nearly hadn't come to choir. You know what she said. She said she was glad I had. I put that in my book cos it made me happy and we got talking. SHe;s recovering from an eating disorder and suffers from anxiety and talking was really good. I'm giving her the .oggs of the mass in c tomorrow and we're going to have coffee at 11am and meet up before the concert on saturday. She's lovely and talking to her really helped. Almost enjoyed choir - first in a while.

Came back down the hill. Jibbled with claire and rah. Claire went to cook cakes for the SU and Rah and I had kudos, then heard foo was on way back so made up the ultimate scrabble game of doom in which we used all the letters available. Basically we made up the longest highest scoring words we could and pretended it had been a proper game to wind foo up. Foo wasn't wound up but that made me happy as well.

Now I'm tired and I want ben and my mood is starting to dip again.

So I will go to bed.

Cos it's 12:30 ;)

I woke up at..well, look at the time, despite the fact it's a weekend and I didn't sleep well. Gonna try sleeping again soon.. Maybe I woke cos of the soreness in wisdom tooth that is coming thru :/

Yesterday was late for work again. Have to sort myself out. Kids were good. Got them to school and lost bycycle/car race for the first time in a while. Sat around reading and IRCing till coffee then went and worked in the rocks room.

Had nice lunch in origins with ben adn foo and rah. Honey and ginger chicken rocks :D

Sat around reading for another hour then off to work. Seemed to drag, esp. after 5pm when the kids start getting restless. Still, completed the week and came back and watched CSI and ate pizza.

Town today. Need to motivate myself to go.

Am tired now :P

Had long day. DIdn't sleep well last night - too hot then too cold and the morning came too soon. Work ok, kids pissed cos they're not allowed to cycle for 2 days. Wasted an hour and was annoyed at incompetance of Computing Helpdesk Frontdesk staff who are idiots then did a couplea hours work in the rocks room.

Had lunch with ben in Eliot which, for once, didn't suck too badly. Sat with Tiggs and Chris (well done on 5 months :D) and Glenn (?) and rob and andy and a person I didn't know. Was good laff. After went for walk with ben.

Killed 45 mins on ppcs and then went to work. Pete was with me tonight which was good. Had nice natter and hung around with Tom outside the school for 45 mins to prevent 2 journeys. Was warm enough for once.

Curry pie and Coupling at ben's afterwards. Came back, had shower and supper of asda wonderful gorgeous strawberry and apple pie and cream. Yum...love that pie :D

Bed time and more than bed time now.

Mar. 3rd, 2004 @ 06:55 pm Last couplea days
Mostly feeling: bouncy
Now Playing: Faure: Requiem - Libera Me
Got back on Monday night and was in temper with the world. Had tooken part in a flame war of much flaminess on ukc.misc where I was repeatedly called a racist. I was annoyed, and not just cos o fthe accusations. I'd gotten so involved in the flame war that I wasted 5 hours in which I was going to do dissertation stuff. Got annoyed with ben, choir seemed to suck and I started to lose my voice. In short, monday wasn't good day.

Yesterday was bit better. Up early for work (urgh) and managed to manage my time so badly I didn't have time for breakkie and then struggled up the hill. Work wasn't bad inna morning, then went to Uni where I...umm...I wasted time till 10, then had Lighthouse breakfast with ben and Rah (and thi I didn't think Iit was possible, it has gone downhill *again* recently) then wasted time till lunch which ben and I had in the gulob and then off to my 1pm leccie.

We saw A Canterbury Tale which I thought was mostly boring, tho the canterbury bits were good, cos it shows the city as it was then, bomb damage and all.

Work not bad, scurried off as soon as children dropped. Had chicken rice and pie for dinner and watched CSI with ben. Was lovely :)

Today was module registration day. Went in and wasted an hour on computers and then had coffee. I stayed in Gulb after buying numerous cups of hot chocolate and fruit tea so I wouldn't get chucked out. Did some dissertation reading (finally!) and took a couplea pages of notes and quotes. Went to register for my special subject (double weighted final year history module). There are half a dozen or so subjects each with about 12 places and competition is fierce for the popular ones and the one I wanted was popular. It's about WW1 and the national psyche and is run by Mark Connelly whom I quite like anyway :) Also registered for my other subjects, both 100% coursework, both about museum work. Woo :D

Lunch with ben and then work.

Which was...interesting.
The children tried to kill themselves by crossing the Whitstable Road on their own. When I reached the kerb they were already half way across. They did this without looking both ways. The Whistable Road, is, as Canterbury people know, a very very busy road. I was livid and told them off then made them sit cross legged on the floor when they got hom. Then I told their parents.

If anything had happened it would have been *my* fault, regardless of if they were being stupid or not. No bikes tomorrow is punishment but their father was also considering grounding.

Good.

Jacket tatoes and cheese and sausages for dinner tonight.

Wooooo :D
