| Aug. 22nd, 2008 @ 07:30 pm Poll: Am I disabled? | |||
|---|---|---|---|

Having made it through Edexcel marking and Clearing more or less in one piece I'm now starting to look at jobs and I've found one I want to apply for. I've become rather stymied by the "Do you consider yourself to have a disability" question. Thing is, I'm much better than I was, I have to be or I wouldn't consider applying for jobs at all and those closest to me wouldn't let me, but I've been off work for a year, and a year long gap doesn't look good on a CV. I'm still seeing my counsellor and I'm still on happy pills, and though I'm winding down visits to my counsellor I'm probably going to be on the pills for at least another year to make sure I'm properly better and try and stop any relapse. Apparently the first year is when I'm most vulnerable to it. My gut says I should declare it, but I also feel like a bit of a fraud for even considering it. "The University operates under the Two ticks scheme which means we will interview all applicants with a disability who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities". This is rather valuable, and I feel it's my only shot at an interview given the huge gap on my CV when I was essentially "doing nothing", but am I really disabled as it's counted? The University say: When answering this question, please note that under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 a disability is defined as ‘a mental or physical impairment which has a substantial and long term effect upon your ability to carry out normal day to day activities.’. Poll #1246569 Job application/disability poll Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 10 Do you think I currently count as "disabled" under the definition above? Should I say "yes" to the disability question on job application forms? (Please post any expansion on this or thoughts in comments below) I can't help but feel that this would all be easier if I were visibly physically disabled. Any (helpful) advice or comments you lot could give would be really great. I'm feeling very mixed up about this, and a tad anxious about giving the "wrong" answer if I'm completely honest. I mean, I was never on benefits while off work (the forms scared me) so never really "disabled" in the eyes of the government. I just don't know what to say :| |

| Mar. 29th, 2008 @ 04:11 pm Trying to find a film - please help :) | |||
|---|---|---|---|
|
I saw a film on one of the terristrial channels some years ago, and I can only remember the barest facts about it. Ben looks at me like I'm completely insane when I try and describe what I can remember of the film. I'm hoping that someone who reads this can help. Or maybe confirm Ben's suggestion that I'm insane ;) The film was about a guy who had died and was in ?purgatory (possibly not the right word). He had a review of his life, which happened in a sort of private cinema (his life events were shown as on film) and his life was shown to be generally wasted. While he was there he met (or re-met) a woman he was attracted to. Her life was shown to be generally good. At the end, they're put on busses to go on to the next stage - his is destined to go back to earth so he can try again and she to go on to heaven. He breaks off his bus and jumps on hers. The authorities decide to let him go on with her. Possibly because they were so touched by the love story ;) Anyway, please help. Either I'm insane, I have a great imagination or it is a real film I really saw. In which case, please tell me it's real and if possible what it is called? Thanks :) |

| Oct. 29th, 2005 @ 04:16 pm Linux Question | |||
|---|---|---|---|
Mostly feeling:
I have a question for computer&Linux geeks.Now Playing: whatever is on sky atm Basically, after my last dist-upgrade, gnome (or debian?) refuses to adopt UK keyboard mapping and every time I try I get the following error message: "Error activating XKB configuration. It can happen under various circumstances: - a bug in libxklavier library - a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities) - X server with incompatible libxkbfile X server version data: The XFree86 Project, Inc 40300001 You are using XFree 4.3.0. There are known problems with complex XKB configurations. Try using a soimpler configuration or taking a more fresh version of XFree software." So...any ideas how to fix? This is the newest version and my config hasn't been changed in years. Do you think I should switch from XFree86 to Xorg? Am I talking shit? Help would be appreciated :) -------- [Edit] All fixed! I purged XFree86 and moved to Xorg and when I broke it all horribly ben fixed it. Winnar :D Ta to skel and evad too - you may claim free chocolate when you next see me :P ;) |
